The Cruel Prince by Holly Black (Book Review)

Hey everybody!  I just finished reading one of the books I was most excited to read this year (new 2018 release)!  The Cruel Prince by Holly Black!

I’m bad at explaining what this book is about (trust me, I tried many times trying to put this into my own words lol, so I’m giving up this time and just gonna post this here), so I’m just going to use the summary from Goodreads:

“Of course I want to be like them. They’re beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever.

And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe.”

Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

When I first heard about this new book from Holly Black, I couldn’t wait and got super excited for it!  It was frustrating, however, that I had a little over a year of a wait before I was able to get my hands on a copy of it.  This was the second book that I read by Holly Black (The first being The Darkest Part of the Forest) and she is definitely becoming one of my favorite authors.  I’ve always been curious and fascinated by fairies/fae and their folklore, but still don’t know much about them, but books like these, and especially Holly Black’s writing and enthusiasm for fae, always make me want to know more!

That being said, I must say that it ended up taking me a while to really get into this book before I became really invested in the story and characters.  Even when I wasn’t invested at first the writing and world building kept me going.  I really DID end up enjoying this book and it made me laugh in some spots, definitely made me tear up a little as well, had action and adventure, and had twists and turns that I didn’t see coming!  I really loved Jude’s and Cardan’s interactions throughout the story but especially towards the end when they had to work together.  XD  I so can’t wait for the next book in this series!!

Are you excited to dive into this book too?  Was this one of your most anticipated books in 2018?  Have you read it yet?!  Let me know in the comments below!  Let’s talk about this book!
